"Uncharted Journey"
This is a blinded portrait and was made with a sharpie pen and acrylic paint. My person wrote about having to leave Venezuela and his mom behind, but on a different part he mentions that when he's alone he can find peace or a way to be peaceful. The map in the painting is meant to represent Venezuela and his journey to the US, and it's leading into a mountain of clouds that are in complete black and white. This is to show the uncertainty and countless possibilities that could happen in his life and the white parts are dry and untouched canvas that help convey this message of infinite possibilities. Next to show his positivity with loneliness there is a light through the clouds to represent a light at the end of the tunnel and that good will come with enough patience. Finally the contrast between the styles is to split up the idea of what's already happened and what has yet to come.
"Competitive Jungle"
This is my "Kill The Pen" challenge meaning that it is made fully from a Bic pen. I first started with a loose sketch to figure out how I wanted my scene to look and be composed. Afterwards I tested different shading styles to find a way to make my desired effect, but ended up using a more free form style of shading that uses scribbling and less straight lines. I was inspired by the fact that plants in a jungle fight for sunlight, so with the mini sapling in the middle I wanted to convey an idea of growth through competition. I really enjoyed this project, and if I would do something different I would add more animals.
Portrait/Charcoal Studies
"Penultimate"
This is my charcoal final that is made from only charcoal on white paper. I wanted to experiment and get better at charcoal and this piece was one of the better outcomes. I tried to express a wide variety of tints and shades, bringing contrast to the piece. Then I took an eraser and added highlights for texture and glow to certain parts. I really enjoy how the jersey turned out and the dynamic pose of it all, but if I had to improve on something it would be how the arms connect to the body.
"Echo of Rain"
This is an experiment into scratch board. When looking at the scratch board texture, it made me think of rain. So I wanted to show two different conflicting emotions that rain can bring, and try to mix them into one. Rain often symbolizes sadness and negative emotions, but it could also create a sense of freedom and joy. But just because these emotions are conflicting, doesn't mean they are mutually exclusive. So all in all the main point of this piece is to capture my own contradicting emotion, while using rain as the source of these feelings. If I could change anything it would be to take more time on the head and leg perspectives. Overall I really enjoyed this process of scratch board, and I think I learned a lot from this piece.
"Mind's Eye"
This piece was made with a red and green pen. The idea for this piece was from a want to mix two different perspectives into one piece. I wanted to show how an outside point of view would see me(In red), contrasted with the inner ego of my mind's own point of view(In green). The red is shown in many different panels to convey that the outside persona is a type of clothing or protection. I'm really proud of the different expressions I was able to bring out through many different parts of my body. If I were to do something different I would have used a ruler on the background lines to make them more consistent.
